In the past we widely talked on this blog on the 7 reasons why any traveller should consider a trip to Nepal, and also what to expect on one of the most famous treks in the world: the Everest Basecamp.
Today, we would like once more bring your attention to the heart of the majestic Himalayas where lies a small, quiet village that many trekkers pass through but few truly appreciate, the name of this out-of-the-world place is Macchermo Village.
Situated at an altitude of 4470 meters (14,665 ft) in the Dudh Koshi River valley of the Solukhumbu District, Macchermo is more than just a rest stop on the way to Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri: it’s a serene Himalayan hamlet where the astonishing magnitude of nature combines with warm, hospitable Sherpa people in the midst of snow-capped giants.
Whether you’re a seasoned trekker seeking solitude or a first-time visitor curious about Himalayan culture, Macchermo is a must-stop on the Gokyo Valley trail, a place where altitude meets authenticity.
In this article, we will show you what to expect when crossing this village, and explain you why, in our opinion, this tiny corner of the world deserves more attention than what normally trekkers give to it 🙂
Let’s dive right in!! 😀
Let’s get started!
1. Why Macchermo Deserves More Attention
on the Gokyo Trail
Most trekkers heading toward Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri think of Macchermo as just another overnight stop between Dole and the final push in Everest Three Passes Trek. But it’s more than that!
Unlike the popular, crowded villages like Namche Bazaar or Lukla in the Khumbu region, Macchermo remains an unspoilt, tranquil village.
Daily life at Macchermo forms over the sun and season, not the trekking crowd.
A pleasing sun rising between gigantic peaks like Thamserku and Kangtega is one thing you must not miss here.
Yaks grazing over wide pastures along the rocky hillsides, Buddhist prayer flags fluttering over stone houses, and chants humming from nearby monasteries offer one-of-a-kind Tibetan cultural experiences.
Personally, the feeling I got from crossing this place is somewhat similar to the one I felt while trekking remote areas of the Andes in Bolivia and Latin America: fresh mountain air, slow paced days and stillness away from modern complexity!
2. The Macchermo Altitude Advantage:
A Perfect Acclimatization Stop
Anyone who is familiar with high-altitude trekking in Nepal knows the golden rule: acclimatize or abort.
Macchermo is a perfect overnight stay location to acclimatize to the increasing elevation before ascending to Gokyo (4790 m) and beyond.
It is also a grazing village for cattle for the people of Khumjung and Khunde.
Macchermo is a short but steep climb from Dole.
The trek organised by Himalayan Masters, one of the most prominent and well-established companies to join for trekking the Himalayas, includes a one-night stay in Macchermo, allowing your body to rest and acclimatize while exploring the surrounding ridges and viewpoints – if you’re interested in trekking this part of the Himalaya, I would highly recommend it!
These acclimatization hikes offer breathtaking panoramas of Cho Oyu (the sixth-highest mountain in the world, 8,188 m) and stunning views of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal.
3. Macchermo’s Lesser-Known
History and Culture
Few people know that Macchermo was the site of one of Nepal’s only documented Yeti sightings.
In 1974, a porter from the area claimed he was attacked by a Yeti in the village.
The tale is still told by locals, giving the area a mysterious charm.
Beyond myths, Macchermo has a deep spiritual connection with nature and long-preserved Tibetan culture.
Small chortens (Buddhist shrines) and mani walls lined with carved stones reflect the significance of Tibetan culture to its visitors.
Here, mountains are sacred, and every path holds a prayer.
The Macchermo Monastery, although small, is a peaceful spot where travellers can light butter lamps and offer thanks for a safe passage.
4. Accommodation and Local Hospitality
Despite its high elevation and tiny size, there are several comfortable teahouses and lodges here.
These family-run accommodations provide warm meals, cozy blankets, and a much-needed place to rest your tiredness.
Don’t expect luxury, but do expect genuine Sherpa hospitality.
It’s not unusual to be offered a cup of hot salt butter tea and hear stories of past expeditions over the evening fire.
It’s obvious to think the teahouses to be lacking insulation at such elevation. But Macchermo delivers just that, alongside some of the clearest night skies you’ll ever witness.
5. Things to Do in Macchermo
If you choose to spend a full day in Macchermo, here are a few things definitely worth doing::
-
Climb the Ridge Above the Village: A short hike leads to a high ridge offering dramatic views of Cho Oyu and the Ngozumpa Glacier. This acclimatization hike is short but steep—perfect for preparing your lungs too! 🙂
- Explore the Local Life: Visit the local yak pastures or spend time talking to teahouse owners about life in the highlands. You’ll learn about seasonal migrations, Everest expeditions, and traditional Sherpa practices.
- Attend a Puja at the Monastery: If your visit aligns with a prayer session, attending a puja (ritual ceremony): it is a deeply calming and spiritual experience!
Conclusion
And here we are at the end of our article 🙂
Macchermo may not have the fame of Namche or the views of Kala Patthar, but it offers something rare in today’s world: stillness and soul.
In the region dominated by the EBC trek in the Khumbu region, Macchermo remains untouched, authentic, and deeply spiritual.
It’s a reminder that not all rewards are at the summit; some lie quietly on the trail, waiting to be noticed.
So, the next time you plan your trek to the Gokyo Valley, don’t just pass through Macchermo: try to catch a breath, stay, explore, and connect. Enjoy the moment, feel your presence along the way and the beauty of the path.
You’ll leave with stronger lungs, warmer memories, and perhaps even a story or two to share back home.
