7 Fun Facts about Pigeon Forge

1. The Town’s Population is Surprisingly Small,

with only 6300 people!

Pigeon Forge welcomes more than a whooping 10 Million tourists every year (to give you an idea, the whole city of Venice welcomes just 5,7M yearly),  and in town there are on average 50.000 thousand people every day.

Said that, you’ll be surprised to know that the actual number of residents in 2024 barely made it over the 6.000 people mark, stopping at 6343! 🙂

Given the small amount of residents, we would be almost talking about a village, rather than a town, if it wasn’t for the unbelievable crowds of tourists coming to visit Pigeon Forge and its numerous events throughout the year!

Many visitors love Pigeon Forge so much that they decide to buy a property in the area instead of booking hotels every time they visit, while some fall in love with the area so much that they decide to stay long-term.

Overall, it is possible to find plenty of beautiful condos for sale Pigeon Forge TN offers, making it easier for those who want a permanent retreat in the Smokies.

 2. Pigeon Forge Was Named after Actual Pigeons

The name “Pigeon Forge” might sound weird at first, but when you investigate it throughly it actually has a very surprising origin.

The first part comes from the passenger pigeons that once filled the skies in this region (an endemic species typical of North-America).

These now-extinct special species of pigeon-birds (sadly because human activity) used to gather along the Little Pigeon River, which runs through the town itself.

The second part of the name, “Forge”, refers to an iron forge built in the early 1800s, a major part of the town’s early economy.

Over time, as tourism grew, Pigeon Forge transformed into a thriving destination, but its name remains even today as a tribute to its past that is no more 🙂

3. For many decades, Pigeon Forge has been a “Dry” city,

where selling alcohol was forbidden!

Before turning into a sought-after mountain resort, Pigeon Forge was wildly different!

In the early 1900s, Pigeon Forge was mostly farmland, with no major attractions or bustling tourism industry.

In the mid-20th century, there was a proposal to build a dam on the Little Pigeon River near Pigeon Forge as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) projects to help the region with flood control, generate hydroelectric power, and boost tourism by providing recreational water activities.

The plan though, faced strong opposition from residents and environmentalists who were concerned about the impact on the area’s natural beauty, wildlife, and existing communities (Pigeon Forge would have gone underwater!). Eventually, the project was (luckily) canceled!

From the 660s following the prohibitionistic movement, Sevier County became “dry”, meaning the sale of alcohol was heavily restricted or outright banned for many years, and so the town of Pigeon Forge too, passed from the risk of being underwater, to be entirely “dry” 😉

Just recently, changes in local laws allowed some exceptions, in particular for restaurants and distilleries with special permits (while if you want to purchase alcohol in a Supermarket, even today you’ll be luckier in nearby Gatlinburg).

4. Pigeon Forge’s Dollywood has been voted

the N.1 Theme Park in the US on Tripadvisor (2024)

Dollywood is one of the largest thematic parks in the US (which also topped Disneyland in Tripadvisor’s classific!), the biggest attraction in Pigeon Forge, and surely the most well-known too!

The fun fact is, that it hasn’t always carried that name.

The park originally opened in 1961 with the name of “Rebel Railroad”, featuring a steam train ride and a few Western-themed attractions.

Over the years, it went through multiple rebrands, becoming “Goldrush Junction” and later “Silver Dollar City”.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that Dolly Parton became involved and eventually transformed the park into Dollywood in 1986.

Her goal was to create a place that celebrated Smoky Mountain culture and Southern heritage, while also providing top-tier entertainment.

Today, Dollywood is one of the most-visited theme parks in the United States, known for its thrilling rides, live music, and authentic Appalachian crafts.

Due to its proximity to Dollywood and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, both of which attract millions of visitors annually, the location of Pigeon Forge revelead itself to be spot on for such a family-oriented tourist attraction!

The museum itself, is built as a half-scale replica of the Titanic and features artifacts, interactive exhibits, and personal stories of passengers and crew, making it a unique addition to the region’s entertainment offerings: it feels like truly entering the Titanic – very notable is the famous Grand Staircase! 🙂

Did you know that near Pigeon Forge you have a big chance to spot black bears?

The Smoky Mountains are home to over 1,900 black bears, and Pigeon Forge is one of the best places to see them in their natural habitat (it’s the most densely populated area in the Eastern States!)

While they are named “black bears”, not all of them are black, you might also spot some brown, cinnamon or even with blondish fur.

If you do happen to see one, it’s important to keep your distance and never feed them – approaching bears is both dangerous and illegal.

Also running is not a great option, as these bears can reach a speed up to 35mph (way faster than the world’s fastest human sprinter!). Better, is to simply stay calm and walk away 🙂

Last but not least, remember that “bear jams” are a real thing in the region: sometimes cars stop in the middle of the road to watch a bear sighting, causing major traffic accidents and delays (so keep an eye on the road too!) 🙂
