Hello beautiful people, and welcome back on the route and to another trip to Caribbean sea! 🙂
Located just off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, today we will discover Cozumel, a tropical Caribbean island famous for one thing above all else: its waters!
Crystal-clear water, vibrant coral reefs, turquoise sandbars, drift diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing… this place is basically a giant natural playground for ocean lovers, located in one of beautiful seas on Earth!
Despite being only around 48 km (30 miles) long, Cozumel has become one of the most visited cruise destinations in the world, welcoming millions of travelers every year.
And honestly, there is no need to wonder why: the island sits directly alongside the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (the second-largest coral reef system on Earth after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef) which gives Cozumel some of the clearest and most colorful waters in the Caribbean!
The island’s main attraction, are all the activities you can do in its waters, from discovering reef clubs to tropical fish, hidden coastline views, and some genuinely (and adrenalinic!) unforgettable adventures.
Whether you’re staying for a week or just visiting for a few hours during a cruise stop, these are the 7 activities you should consider to make your trip to Cozumel truly special!
Let’s dive right in! 🙂
7 Most Awesome Things
to Do in Dubai!
1) Try Parasail Above the Caribbean Sea!
I’ll be honest… I was never excited about parasailing.
Parasailing always felt to me like one of those “random tourist activities” people do when they run out of ideas at a beach resorts…
Turns out, I was completely wrong and it is actually pretty awesome!
First things first, the takeoff from the boat is surprisingly smooth.
There’s no dramatic jump or running start… You basically just sit in the harness attached to the parachute while the boat slowly accelerates… and suddenly you’re floating above the blue sea!
And wow!
With crystal waters, the perspective from up there is insane, and with the fresh wind in the face it encompasses multiple senses, becoming a true sensorial experience!
While flying on the sea in Cozumel, you can see the reef patches beneath the water, the fish swimming below, the giant cruise ships docked near the port, and the coastline stretching faraway along the western side of the island.
The water has this absurd baby-blue color that almost doesn’t look real. At certain points it genuinely felt like flying above a swimming pool! xD
The flight itself lasts around 15 minutes, which honestly feels longer (probably because the brain kind of loses track of time up there).
One thing that surprised me was the pricing.
I expected Caribbean parasailing near a cruise port to be ridiculously expensive, but it was actually far cheaper booking directly with local operators instead of through the cruise line.
We ended up booking with Jet Ski Cozumel we found online, mainly because Poe (the owner) was super-responsive on WhatsApp and patiently answered all our silly first-timer questions without sounding annoyed ahah 😉
The experience cost around $75 per person, which is significantly cheaper than the cruise excursion version, and it also includes beach club access afterward.
Honestly? If you only have a few hours in Cozumel and want one activity that immediately makes you understand how beautiful this island is… this is probably the one!
2. Snorkel the Famous Reefs of Cozumel
Cozumel for snorkeling is like one of those magical places…like Nusa Penida, Thailand or Australia!
The visibility here regularly exceeds 30 meters (100 feet), which is absolutely WILD if you’re not used to Caribbean reefs (incredible to see so far below!).
At times it feels more like floating above an aquarium than swimming in the ocean 🙂
Even better: you don’t need to be an expert swimmer.
Most snorkeling tours offered in the area, bring you to relatively shallow reef areas where the coral begins just a few meters below the surface, making everything super easy to see.
The most famous snorkeling spots around are:
- the Palancar Reef
- the Colombia Reef
- the “El Cielo”
And yes… El Cielo really does look like the internet photos (google it to know what I’m talking about 😉 – it’s the same beach as in the opening photo!).
Normally I’m skeptical when places become “Instagram famous”, but this one actually deserves the hype.
The water is ridiculously transparent, shallow in many areas, and filled with giant starfish resting on the white sand below!
While diving in Cozumel, you’ll likely see:
- parrotfish
- sea turtles
- stingrays
- barracudas
- eagle rays
- colorful coral formations
As seen around, a typical snorkeling boat tour costs somewhere between $45 and $65 depending on how many reef stops are included and whether food/drinks are provided.
Some tours are more party-oriented with music and cocktails, while others focus mainly on the reef itself. Personally, I’d choose the second option. The reef is the real star here 😉
3. Try Jet Skiing Along the Coastline
If snorkeling is the peaceful side of Cozumel… jet skiing is the chaotic fun side 😅
The western coast of the island is usually protected from strong waves, which means the water stays relatively calm for most of the year. That makes it surprisingly beginner-friendly even if you’ve never touched a jet ski before!
After a short safety briefing, you basically head out into this giant open turquoise playground – and it feels like an open-world videogame! 🙂
By jet-skiing around, you might see details you would completely miss from land, such as:
- little rocky sections between beach clubs
- jungle vegetation almost touching the sea
- tiny piers extending into the transparent water
- iguanas sunbathing on sea walls (really!)
Not bad right?
Most rentals last between 30 and 60 minutes, while guided tours usually stop at scenic points along the coastline.
Prices generally range between $60 and $90 depending on duration and whether it’s guided.
One thing that stands out, is that local operators are much more relaxed and human (latin-vibe!) compared to the super rigid cruise excursions. The vibe felt less “tourist conveyor belt” and more actual Caribbean-holiday-island energy 😉
4. Discover Cozumel’s Underwater World
with Scuba Diving
Cozumel is consistently ranked among the best scuba diving destinations on Earth…
And after seeing the reefs here… easy to get why!
The island is famous for drift diving (in this article we explain completely what it is), where ocean currents gently carry divers along giant reef walls while you simply float and observe marine life around you.
It almost feels like flying underwater.
If you’re already certified, sites like:
- Santa Rosa Wall
- Palancar Gardens
- Punta Sur
are considered legendary among divers.
The reef walls here drop dramatically into deep blue water, creating this slightly intimidating but also damn beautiful underwater landscape!
Also, a piece of good news: you don’t actually need a diving license to try scuba diving in Cozumel.
Many operators offer “Discover Scuba” experiences where beginners first practice basic skills in shallow water before heading to an easy reef dive with an instructor 🙂
Scuba here is not exactly cheap as other actiities — usually around $120–150 — but surely it is one of those activities that you would remember for years!
5. Relax at a Beach Club
After Your Adventures
6) Explore the
Wild Eastern Side of the Island
Now here’s the side of Cozumel many cruise passengers never see: the eastern coast!
By hiking here, you’ll find a completely different atmosphere…
While the western side is calm and developed, the eastern shoreline faces the open Caribbean Sea directly. Bigger waves, rougher coastline, fewer buildings, almost no cruise crowds 🙂
Driving and then hiking there, almost feels like entering another island.
There are long empty stretches of road, small beach bars made of wood and palm leaves, and giant waves crashing against the rocks (is less protected and that’s why waves are bigger!).
Some sections honestly remind more of Hawaii than the Caribbean!
Notice: Swimming here can be dangerous, as in certain areas currents can be very strong, but simply exploring this side of the island on land it is worth too!.
What you should do? Stop at one of the roadside beach restaurants, order fresh fish tacos, and enjoy the ocean views without 5,000 cruise passengers around you 🙂
7. End the Day with a Sunset Catamaran Cruise
Are you staying more than a couple days in Cozumel?
Then you should also try a sunset catamaran tour, which is one of the most relaxing ways to experience the island, especially if you’re traveling as a couple (it can be pretty romantic xD) or if you just want something slower-paced after several adrenaline-packed activities.
Most catamaran tours in Cozumel include:
- open bar (but check before booking!)
- snorkeling stop
- music
- sunset cruise along the coast
And yes, it’s touristy… but sometimes touristy things are touristy for a reason (I’ve been a touristic entertainer for 9 seasons, I know what I am talking about! 😉
Watching the sky turn orange and pink while sailing past the coastline with warm Caribbean wind hitting your face is honestly hard to dislike, and a great memorable experience to conclude any glorious day! 🙂
Practical Tips Before Visiting Cozumel
- Book Directly with Local Operators
Cruise excursions are often massively overpriced.
Booking directly online or through local operators can easily save you 20–40%, especially for parasailing, snorkeling and jet ski tours.
- Visit in the Morning
Morning conditions are usually calmer, less crowded and you’ll find better visibility underwater.
Especially important for snorkeling and diving!
- Bring Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Mexico has become stricter about protecting coral reefs, and many marine parks require biodegradable sunscreen.
Plus… normal sunscreen damages coral ecosystems over time, so it’s genuinely worth respecting.
- Rent a Scooter or Jeep
Cozumel is small enough to explore independently, and driving around the island is honestly part of the experience itself.
A full island loop takes only a few hours with stops.
Conclusions 🙂
