Ireland: What to Pack

Think Rain or Shine!

Did you know that the Irish have the widest vocabulary for describing rain on Earth? Wet rain, drizzlin’ rain, horizontal rain, sore rain, spitting rain, pissing rain, bucketing rain… there’s a reason why!

The most important and essential postulate you should have in mind when packing is only one: the weather in Ireland is hardly predictable throughout the whole year; at least every second day is raining! (Ever wondered how Ireland can be so green? It takes LOT of water ;).

Temperature-wise, the Irish climate is mild and bearable in all seasons.

The winter months Nov-March is extremely rainy and quiet cold (I remember not seeing a single day without rain during a whole month in November), while the spring’s and summer’s months are generally warmer and sunnier (still, remember that sun may shine bright one minute, and the one after it’s raining cats and dogs!).

Depending on the season you’re visiting, you may need slightly heavier or lighter clothes (my favorite months for visiting are April, May, and September, which are mostly sunny and still not full of tourists). In the following list, I’ll go through the essentials you need to pack for any Irish trip and options for different seasons.

As a rule of Thumb: Waterproof and Layered Like an Onion, Loose fit and Sporty to mix with the locals.

All Year

  • Waterproof Comfy Hiking Shoes
  • Second pair of shoes (trainers suggested)
  • Rain Jacket or Rain Poncho (way better option than the umbrella, which, with the side wind, won’t help you much and could easily breaks)
  • Socks
  • Hoodie/Zippy
  • Waterproof Sweater
  • Trousers/Jeans
  • Flip Flop (only for inside)
  • Socks
  • Underwear

Spring & Summer

    • T-shirts/Shirts/Dresses
    • Shorts/Skirts
    • Swimming Suit (if you dare to take a cold bath in the Atlantic)

Autumn & Winter

    • Heavy Sweater/ Heavy Jumper
    • Warm Waterproof Winter Coat
    • Scarf
    • Gloves
    • Warm hat

All Year

  • Universal Electricity Adaptor
  • Small bag for daily excursions
  • Re-usable Water Bottle
  • Chargers
  • Photocamera / Phone / GoPro / Laptop
  • Toiletries
  • Plastic Bag for dirty cloths
  • Umbrella (if you didn’t believe me on the rain poncho xD)

Spring & Summer

  • Beach Towel
  • Suncream Protection
  • Sunglasses

  • Passport + Copy
  • Copy of Health Insurance (if you’re not European)
  • Wallet (try not to bring your whole wallet to the pubs, as it’s so common losing wallets drunk in Ireland! 😉 )
  • Prescriptions for Medicaments (if you need some)

In Conclusion

If you think in layers and get comfy with the idea of changing multiple times a day, you won’t have a problem dealing with the Irish weather. If you’ll forget something, main cities are full of malls and tiny shops (and pubs!) where you could find anything you wish for.

Rain sometimes may push you down, just dress smart, get out and don’t get depressed. Rain is part of the uniqueness of Ireland and when it fades, it makes the colours of the landscape and the blue sky all the more bright and beautiful.
