Brunei: What to Pack for your Trip

Think Hot and Short!

Located just 500km north of the equator line, Brunei enjoys a tropical equatorial weather all year round. The lowest temperature you can expect in the colder wet season (Sept-Jan) is 21°C, so it is basically never gets cold.

The poor social life of the country, the absence of bars and the few recreational possibilities makes overstaying longer periods simply not worth. Brunei is the country you should visit, get astonished, understand, and move.

The atmosphere of the country is laid-back, you can dress as you like as long as it’s respectful for others.

Here after I thought of leaving you a check-list of things you may want to pack for your next trip to Brunei, divided in clothing & accessories. My best advice is to plan a trip of 4 nights for which a small trolley or carry-on backpack should be more than enough.

Think for a 3-4 days getaway.

  • Cap or Hat
  • Flip-Flops
  • Trainers (ihmo better over sandals, but up to you)
  • 4-5 T-shirts or light dresses (you’re going to sweat a lot, so you’ll need to change a lot too if you want to make any friends 😉 )
  • Shorts
  • Underwear
  • Light Socks

Better to Avoid

  • Swimming Suit (Brunei is not the right place for that, although few beaches exist; better try any other country in South-East Asia)
  • Night Outfits (there’s no place for entertainment in the nights and no bars, unless you’re planning a fancy dinner in a fancy restaurant, you won’t need any night outfit)
  • Formal Attire (unless you’re here for business, there’s no need)
  • Long Trousers (it’s so hot that the chance you’ll need them is pretty remote)
  • Expensive Jewelry (although Brunei is a safe country, better leave you’re jewels home; nobody would really care about them and you don’t want to try competing with the Sultan ;D )
  • Passport
  • Cash
  • Credit Card (as Debit Cards not always accepted, I had problems with Visa but solved it with Mastercard)
  • Travel Insurance (highly suggested)
  • Suncream Protection
  • Rainponcho (if weather forecast is bad)
  • Universal Electricity Adaptor
  • Small backpack for daily excursions
  • Re-usable Water Bottle
  • Sunglasses (extremely important!)
  • Chargers
  • Photocamera / Phone / GoPro / Laptop
  • Toiletries
  • Medicines against Diarrhea (if you know you have a weak stomach)
  • Mosquito Repellent (as a tropical region, several are still the sicknesses you can get through mosquito bites, it is better be cautios and utilize repellent, even more important in Ulu Temburong)

Better to Avoid

  • Travel Beer (I know it’s sad to get separated from good friends, but alcohol is illegal in Brunei, so for few days you’ll need to do without! sigh )

In Conclusion

Try not to stress too much about packing for Brunei.

As it will likely be for just a few days, it can be considered a spontaneous trip (I suggest visiting the country if you find yourself already in the SE Asian region, as it’s not worth to come from afar only for this tiny country). If you forget something you’ll find in place for affordable prices.

Most important of all, remember to stay safe and protected with suncream and mosquito repellent!
