Let’s be honest for a second: we’re probably the first generation in history that almost never gets to experience real boredom.
Nowadays eveyone of us can carry an entire library, a small army of teachers, every song we’ve ever loved and basically every person we know, all stuffed into that glowing rectangle in our pocket!
And yet, put us in front of a four-hour delay at some random airport, and we still turn into caged animals, refreshing the departures board every ninety seconds as if staring at it harder will make the plane appear sooner!
By having a clear plan though, those unexpected “empty” hours might turn out to be the very best and most enjoyable hours to reflect, grow, cultivate our hobbies and take a break from the stress of rushing from thing to the next!
In this article, we thought of gathering 17 genuinely good ways to burn an empty hour on the road or in an airport, without losing your mind (and perhaps also expand your mind!).
Let’s dive right in! 🙂
1. Read a Book or Ebook!
It’s the original Screen-Free Escape!
An airport gate is basically a free reading nook nobody fights you for!
Grab a paperback or open the Kindle app, and that soul-crushing delay quietly turns into forty pages you’ll actually remember!
If you don’t know what to read or feel uninspired, be sure to check out my list of Best Self-Growth Books to read in 2026.
2. Learn a Language
using an App!
Duolingo’s owl is judging you right now for not opening the app, so you might as well give in xD
Brush up on the language of wherever you’re headed, or start one for a trip you haven’t even booked yet!
Learning languages, as traveling, can expand your mind and turn you into a more conscious, free ciziten of the world (here you can read our article on Why Traveling is Important too!) :).
As for languages, you can read here all my language-related misadventures around the world, and how knowing more languages would have prevented them (just to motivate you to open that app! xD).
3. Plan Your Next Trip…
Boredom can be your Trip-Planning Fuel!
Yes, while you’re still on this one, you can plan your next trip already! xD
I know it might sound unhinged, but boredom is prime trip-planning fuel: open Google Maps, save three villages you can’t pronounce, and suddenly that delay feels less like dead time and more like the start of your next adventure!

4. Organise Your Notes
The Great Digital Declutter
Somewhere in your phone lives a graveyard of half-finished reminders, blurry screenshots and a note that just says “ASK MARCO.”
How I know that? It doesn’t matter… I just KNOW that! 😉
Waiting time is the perfect moment to finally clean that mess up!
Ten minutes of digital decluttering, and you’ll feel unreasonably accomplished ;D
5. Learn Something New With an App
Twenty Minutes, One New Party Trick
History, chess, photography, the mating habits of octopuses: there’s an app for pretty much anything, and twenty minutes is all it takes to learn something weirdly useful!
We rounded up our favourite travel apps here if you need a starting point 🙂
You’ll either win a round of trivia one day or become insufferable at dinner parties, possibly both! xD
6. Listen to a Podcast
For When Your Eyes Need a Break
Perfect for when your eyes are done with screens, but your brain still wants noise…
Pop in your earbuds, close your eyes, and let someone else’s voice do the work for a while 🙂
I have my many YT channels too that I use to learn (for like 10 minutes) and then sleep (for the remainder 110 xD).
Quick tip: Maybe just skip the true crime episode right before a solo night train ;D
7. Create Your Own Soundtrack!
Match the music to the view outside the window, and your budget bus ride or boring airport layover can turn into a scene from a film only you can see! 🙂
Moody piano for fog and mountains, upbeat pop for the coastline…cheap, private and weirdly cinematic!
8. Steal my Sister’s Trick:
knit something!
I cannot knit, nor can my girlfriend, but my sister loves it and does it everywhere!
In her backpack there’s always some yarn!
Knitting is portable, relaxing, and unlike scrolling, you actually end up with something at the end of it ahah Still not for me, but apparently somebody really can love it!
A scarf, a beanie, bragging rights… you know! eheh
9. Call Someone You’ve Neglected…
waiting is the Excuse You’ve Been Waiting For!
YOUR MUM!
JUST CALL YOUR MUM!
NOW!
You’ve had “call mum back” pinned to the top of your to-do list for three weeks now.
A delay hands you the excuse and the time at the same moment.
Use it before the guilt does!
When I am waiting, I always do call my mum, and she is always so happy about it!
We should call mums more often…so yeah, luckily there are travel waiting times sometimes!
10. Talk to a Stranger:
Free Stories and No Wi-Fi Required!
One conversation with the person next to you can turn into a restaurant tip, a friendship, or a story you’ll tell for years.
What can go wrong?
Worst case, they’re a bit odd, don’t make sense, and you go back to your book after five minutes.
What can go right?
You make a good new friend, and time flies by! 🙂
11. Write an Actual Postcard
like in the Good Old Times!
A real, physical, stamped postcard, the kind that outlives every Instagram Story ever posted.
Find a stall, pick something a little tacky, and send it to someone who’ll actually be surprised to find it in their mailbox.
It costs less than your airport coffee and lasts a lot longer 🙂
12. Update Your Travel Journal
For the Details Photos Forget
Write down the small stuff: the smell in the alley, what the taxi driver said, the absurd price of a bottle of water….
Photos remember what things looked like; a journal remembers what they felt like!
Keep it up and, once you’re home, it can even become the backbone of a proper travel photobook.
13. Clean Up Your Camera Roll
Nine Sunsets Is Enough
Somewhere between photo twelve and photo four thousand, you’ve taken the exact same picture of the exact same sunset nine times.
Delete the duplicates, pick your favourites, back up the ones that matter.
Future you, scrolling through memories in ten years, will be grateful 😉
14. Create a Shared Trip Playlist
Everyone Gets the Aux
Hand the aux cord over, metaphorically speaking, and let every person on the trip add a few songs.
What comes out is chaotic, occasionally questionable and somehow becomes the actual soundtrack of the whole journey.
The kind you’ll hear years later and get transported right back 🙂
15. Watch people and Invent Their Stories:
Free, Ruthless, Battery-Free
That man in the crumpled suit sprinting for gate 12 is clearly running from a wedding he just crashed.
The couple arguing in hushed tones by the vending machine are obviously disagreeing over who forgot the passports.
Ok, those are soft… but you can really go wild and it is such a funny game to do!
It’s free, it’s ruthless, and it needs zero battery or Wi-Fi ;D
16. Take a Guilt-Free Nap
Recovery Counts as Productivity
Sometimes the smartest thing you can do with an empty hour is close your eyes and do absolutely nothing with it (trust me, I am a professional in this! xD)
You’re not lazy, you’re recovering energy for the next twelve hours of walking around a city you don’t know yet 🙂
Set an alarm and surren…zzzzzzzZZZZZZZ!
17. Play a Quick Game
Low Effort, Easy Exit
Pick something entertaining that asks for zero commitment, the kind you can drop the second boarding starts without a shred of guilt.
A quick round of a mobile game like Angry birds, Candy Crash, MrQ mobile slots or Asteroid (depending on your age and preferences!) can tick that box perfectly: low effort, easy to stop, gone the moment your row is called! 🙂
Just don’t let it eat the whole layover 🙂
The Point of All This 🙂
Travel downtime isn’t some annoying gap between the “real” parts of the trip.
It is part of the trip.
You don’t need to optimise every minute of it, turn every delay into a productivity exercise, or feel guilty about napping through a rainy afternoon.
You just get to choose whether an empty hour feels wasted, useful, or genuinely enjoyable.
Most of the time, with the right approach, it can be all three at once, which is one more reason travelling is worth it in the first place.
See you on the route! 🙂
