5 Funny Curiosities about Passport Photos that will Surprise you

passport photo

Hello beautiful people, and welcome back on the route! 🙂

Today we will talk about something curious, dreaded and often overlooked: passport photos!

Passport photos are probably one of the most boring parts of travel planning, yet one of those things that will remain with you for a VERY long time and might get very funny – and awkard – as time flies!

You know how it works: stand against a white wall, try not to blink, try not to smile, and then the “bastard” photographer waits for your most awful expression before clicking the button, and somehow you end up looking like you just got arrested in a country you’ve never visited! XD

“Omg you look scary”. “Wow you look like such a criminal”. “That babyyyyy, is that even you??!”.

Every time we have to travel with friends, everybody is always interested in seeing other people’s passports just to see how bad they came in their pictures xD

Personally, I started to create my passport or visa photos online: it is much faster, less stressful, and most of all, I have some control on that image that will follow me for 10 more years! xD

Said that, today we’re going to give some love to the world’s least flattering travel photo, and see 5 funny curiosities about passport photos you probably didn’t know:)

Let’s dive right in!

Let’s get started!

1. You need

to look so damn serious,

to be recognized better!

Taking passport photos are one of the few moments in life where looking happy can actually work against you xD

Did you ever wondered why they tell you not to smile on passport photos?

In many countries, the rule is simple: look straight at the camera, keep your mouth closed, eyes open, and use a neutral expression.

Despite what you might think, that is not because governments are “allergic to joy”, but simply because modern passports are designed for biometric checks and not smiling makes it easy for technology to recognize you!

Big smiles change your cheeks, eyes, mouth shape, and facial proportions — basically the stuff machines use to compare your face, and that’s why you are often asked to avoid them (although, in the very recent years, thanks to AI implementation, rules are getting looser as face-recognition has gotten much much better! 🙂

2. In 1916, a girl had a passport photo with her dog

This might be the best passport photo fact ever xD

We are in Germany in the past century, passport photos became legally required in 1915, but the early rules were nothing like they are today.

Passports were a novelty!

From that time, a famous 1916 German passport from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha has been retrieved, showing a young girl posing with her dog!

At the time, the key requirement was basically: can the photo fit on the passport page? 😀

Today, that photo would be rejected immediately or deemed as a bad joke, but over 100 years ago, it was legal (and I wonder if thanks to that, also the dog could travel eheh).

Now, rules are instead very clear: for passport photos no pets, no toys, no extra humans, and no “this is my emotional support border-control dog.” 😉

And while in 1916, your dog could apparently join your identity document. Today, even your glasses are suspicious…

3. Glasses went from “normal accessory” to “international passport villain”

For decades, people wore glasses in passport photos without thinking much about it.

Now, many official systems hate them.

The reason is not fashion, but glare!

Glasses can reflect light, create shadows, cover the eyes, or confuse automatic checks.

Since the eyes are one of the most important parts of identity matching, even innocent-looking frames can become a bureaucratic problem.

The ICAO-style guidance (International Civil Aviation Organization) for example, allows prescription glasses only when the eyes remain clearly visible, while some countries now tell applicants to specifically remove them completely unless medically necessary.

Personally, having traveled in all continents around the world, I would recommend you to always take your passport photo without glasses (use lenses instead if you really need it!), that will save much time at automatic border controls or during routine checks 🙂

4. Your passport photo

may have 10 years to betray you! 😉

This is one of the funniest parts of adult passports: in many countries (Italy included!), they can last up to 10 years.

Ten years is a long time for a human face.

In that time, you can change haircut, grow a beard, lose weight, gain weight, discover skincare, become a parent, survive a breakup, train for an Ironman, or go through three different “new me” eras.

And yet, at the airport, that tiny old photo is still supposed to prove that “you” are “you”.

Think how much you changed from when you were 18 to 28…or 55 to 65…

The real question is not: “Do I look exactly the same?” – of course 10 years after you won’t (unless you’ve got some magic secret!).

The true question is: “Can a border officer or machine still reasonably recognize me after 10 years?”.

Normal aging or a new hairstyle are usually not a problem for machine and human recognition.

But major appearance changes can be…

Some passport authorities specifically mention significant facial surgery, trauma, major weight change, or large new facial tattoos/piercings as reasons you may need a new passport.

Which brings us to our last curiosity…

5. Plastic surgery can create

an identity-document plot twist

Here’s where passport photos become weirdly modern…

Ever wondered what happens when someone gets facial surgery and no longer looks like their passport photo? Well, here traveling might become complicated eheh

After all, the passport’s job is identity verification, and if the face in the document and the face at the border look too different, officers may start asking questions.

Canada, for example, has official guidance for replacing a valid passport when appearance changes for medical reasons.

EU authorities also warn that significant facial surgery or trauma can require updating the passport photo.

Legally though, it’s very hard to decide “how much” of a change is “too much” and needs a new passport – the international framework is very weak on who gets to decide that.

The tricky part is that minor changes usually do not matter, but “major structural changes” to the face can.

On the internet, there are plenty of viral travel stories of influencers and public figures being questioned because their current appearance looked dramatically different from their passport or ID photo (just a quick google away, and you’ll find many!) 🙂

And here we are at the end of this article!

Passport photos may look like a boring piece of bureaucracy, but behind that tiny serious face there is a whole world of strange rules, biometric technology, historical weirdness, and unexpected identity problems 😉

The next time you take one, remember: you are not just taking a photo, you are creating a 10-year official screenshot of your face!

So look straight, remove the glasses, don’t bring your dog, and maybe avoid getting a completely new face before your next airport check xD

Before going, as always, I’d love to ask you something:

  • Have you ever taken a decent passport photo? xD
  • Does it still looks like you after many years?
