As an Italian, what I always say, is that Tokyo to me is the most unbelievably different city in the world from what I am used to see: it’s crowded, exaggerated, humongous, colorful, but still somehow so perfectly organised, structured and surprisingly authentic!
If you’re a foodie or a travel enthusiast, you’re in for a treat, as Tokyo’s food culture is one of the most diverse and exciting in the world.
Here are five fun facts about Tokyo and its incredible food scene that will make you want to book your next flight right away.

1. Tokyo has the most Michelin-star
Restaurants in the World!
Tokyo is a culinary powerhouse!
The fact that the Great Metropolitan Tokyo Area hosts 36million people, that everybody needs to eat, and that Japanese are more used to eat outside instead of cooking at home, makes it easy to guess why there are so many restaurants for all pockets, and also so many boutique ones!
Tokyo has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city, as it counts over 200 Michelin stars across the whole area, which makes it the ultimate destination for gourmet dining.
From sushi and ramen to tempura and kaiseki, the culinary landscape here offers a taste of everything!

2. Tokyo has the World’s largest
Fish Market!
The once famous Tsukiji Fish Market, now relocated to Toyosu Market, is the largest fish market in the world.
To give you feeling of the magnitude of this place, think that everyday it moves approximately 1400 tons of fish which include any kind of fish, from huge tunas to salmons and even whales! Here fish are sold and auctioned everyday and distributed to all the restaurants of Tokyo and beyond.
The Toyosu market is a surreal experience and surely a paradise for seafood lovers.

These convenient machines are a testament to Tokyo’s fast-paced lifestyle and innovative spirit, changing the way that people think about meals.
Aside from food, there are even some mystery vending machines in Tokyo, where you pay a set amount and get a surprise gift – whilst there’s a big mix of items, some even have high-value prizes such as games consoles.
4. No Tipping, Please!
One of the most important aspects of dining out in Tokyo (and Japan in general) is understanding the tipping etiquette.
Unlike many other countries, tipping is not customary in Japan.
