Halfway to Heaven: Why Long-Distance Couples come to Italy?

poster about venice

As a person who has been involved in long-distance relationships for many years, I know how it feels…in two honest words: it sucks!

It might be “ok” at first, when you really feel the love burning, but after a while, be it one, two, or three months, finding a system to meet each other regularly is essential to reconnect and keep the flame alive!

People in long-distance relationships statistically travel more than average travel-loving individuals, because they don’t only travel to see the world, but also to see each other multiple times a year.

What does that mean?

Yes… The price of multiple plane tickets (and related connections!) does hurt the wallet!

Even though international travel can be extremely costly for long-distance couples, in-person visits remain crucial for long-distance couples, as they help maintain the deeper emotional connection that technology alone hardly can

Unfortunately, this cost is hardly avoidable!

That said, let’s think about it: people living afar are going to invest that time, money, and emotional energy anyway, so why not pick a place that gives them more than just a “see you for a weekend” always in the same place?

That’s what many long-distance couples seem to be thinking today, when they choose Italy as the meeting point to catch up with one another!

Why Italy you wonder?

Known for art, food, landscapes, and history, this country ticks boxes many other meet-up destinations might miss, and that’s just the tip of the Gelato! 😉

Beyond the clichés (pasta, gondolas, gelato), there are real, practical, and emotional reasons why meeting in Italy works especially well for couples juggling distance, budgets, and time zones.

In this article, we will go through 7 of them, and as an Italian myself, I will explain to you in detail why our country is so ideal for a meetup with your special one! 😉

So if you’re planning your next meetup, read on. Here are seven reasons why Italy is not just a nice option — it could be the sweet spot for your long-distance love story.

Let’s dive right in! 😀

Why long-distance couples choose

Italy to meet up?

Reason 1: Geography & Travel Access

Reaching Italy it’s actually easier than you think!

alitalia plane flying in italy

When you’re in a long-distance relationship, every reunion starts with logistics.

Flights, transfers, connections, missed connections… to put it bluntly, romance has to survive the spreadsheet! xD

That’s the first reason why Italy quietly wins!

Located in Southern Europe, near Africa and not far from the Middle East, Italy is one of the best-connected countries in Europe, acting as a natural “bridge” between continents.

Whether one of you is in London, Paris, or New York — or even further, like Dubai or Buenos Aires — getting to Italy is often faster and cheaper than meeting anywhere else in the Mediterranean.

Italy has, in fact, over 40 commercial airports, including seven major international ones that handle millions of passengers each year:

And beyond those?

There are more than 30 smaller regional airports, scattered from Turin to Bari, Cagliari, Verona, and even Brindi, which are served by low-cost companies such as Ryanair and Wizz Air — meaning you can always land surprisingly close to wherever you plan to meet…and have many options to check out!

Once you’re on the ground, getting around in Italy is also just as easy!

Italy’s train network, managed by Trenitalia, is one of the most extensive in Europe.

High-speed lines link Rome–Florence in 1 hour 30 minutes, Milan–Venice in 2 hours, and Naples–Rome in just over an hour.

Even small towns are reachable by regional trains thanks to a truly capillary network of railroads — ideal if you want to escape the big-city rush and hide away somewhere quiet for a few days.

Prefer to save money or take the scenic route?

Long-distance buses like FlixBus and MarinoBus cover hundreds of routes daily.

For the price of a pizza (literally €10-15), you can go from Milan to Rome overnight, or Venice to Florence in under four hours.

Compare this with other “romantic” meetup spots like Greece (fewer direct flights and longer ferry connections), France (where costs skyrocket in Paris), or Switzerland (beautiful but budget-breaking), and you can clearly see why Italy hits the perfect middle ground: affordable, central, and easy to navigate.

That’s why so many long-distance couples pick it: you spend less time in transit, more time enjoying meaningful experiences together! 🙂

Reason 2:

Italy is much cheaper than you think!

alitalia plane flying in italy

Here’s a surprise most long-distance couples don’t expect: Italy is not nearly as expensive as its reputation — especially if you travel smart!

According to Numbeo, the cost of living in Italy ranges from 20-60% cheaper than Germany (depending on the region and city you choose to visit), cheaper than France and slightly under the already-convenient but not-so-connected Spain.

For starters, just walking around Italy feels like a paid experience… except it’s free!

You don’t need museum tickets to feel history here — wandering through Venice’s canals, Verona’s Juliet House and Arena, Rome’s ancient ruins, or Naples’ chaotic alleys is entertainment on its own…and the list could go on forever here!

Every corner feels like a movie scene, and couples can take epic photos that will look like postcards even without spending a cent!

And I am not talking only about architecture, churches and arts…also nature in Italy is incredible and free: from the alpine Dolomites to the seas and hundreds of lakes, there’s really something for everyone!

And then don’t forget food!

When it comes to food… relax once again! 😀

Italy feeds everyone, from backpackers to honeymooners 😉

Of course, to save your money, skip the tourist traps, and you’ll find that authentic trattorias and family-run pizzerias which offer full course meals for €10–20 per person.

Pizza prices? Typically €4–14, depending on where you are (spoiler: the further south you go in Italy, the cheaper and better it gets 😉 – and if you want to know all differences between North and Southern Italy, be sure to check out our article too! 🙂

Street food is another goldmine: supplì in Rome, arancini in Sicily, panzerotti in Puglia, or a classic gelato…all can be found for under €3 🙂

Internet? No problem too!

eSIMs like Airalo, Holafly, and TIM make data easy and cheap — usually €10–15 for 50GB, perfect for Google Maps, photo uploads, and video calls home.

Even accommodation is kinder to your wallet than you’d think.

Italy is filled with clean, comfortable stays for every budget: AirBnB in art cities from 40-50Euro/night boutique B&Bs from €30–90, and charming countryside agriturismi starting around €80 with breakfast included.

And if you think you’ve seen Italy after Rome, Venice, and Florence — think again! There are dozens of incredible, less-crowded destinations that cost half as much and feel twice as local. (We actually made a list — check out our article on the 100 Top Places to See in Italy if you want ideas 😉).

Lastly, I will leave you here some of Italy’s best free experiences you might want to consider:

  • Watching the sunset over Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo.

  • Hiking the Path of the Gods on the Amalfi Coast.

  • Exploring Trastevere’s cobbled lanes in Rome.

  • Swimming in Sardinia’s turquoise coves.

  • Or just sitting on a piazza bench with two espressos, watching life unfold xD

Italy proves you don’t need to spend a fortune to feel rich — just curiosity, good shoes, and someone you love walking beside you! 😉

Reason 3:

Beauty is everywhere,

and there is something for all tastes!

Italy isn’t just one kind of beautiful — it’s a kaleidoscope of landscapes, where you can go from glaciers to beaches in a single day!

That’s what makes it perfect for long-distance couples: whatever your shared “vibe” is — hiking, art, sea, or slow countryside days — you’ll find your sweet spot here 🙂

Let’s start from the top, literally, with just few ideas 😉

For Mountain Lovers

For those looking for crisp air and postcard views, northern and central Italy are an incredible paradise:

  • Lago di Braies (Trentino-Alto Adige) – so perfect it looks Photoshopped; reflections so clear you’ll both lose track of time.
  • Lago di Tovel (Trentino) – peaceful, wild, and far less crowded than its famous cousin.
  • Campo Imperatore (Abruzzo) – known as “Little Tibet,” this plateau offers cinematic sunsets at 1,800 m.
  • Cima del Vesuvio (Campania) – hiking an active volcano together? That’s one for the memory book! 😉
  • Dolomites Region – hundreds of trails and cozy refuges; perfect mix of adrenaline, mountain air and freedom!

For History and Art Lovers

For couples that love wandering through the past, Italy is basically one giant open-air museum:

  • Pompeii – walk side by side through streets frozen in time since 79 AD.
  • Verona & the Arena – famous for an impressive Roman amphitheatre and the balcony of Romeo and Juliet.
  • Rome – where every corner hides 2,000 years of stories and more!
  • Venice – not just gondolas; its architecture is a living art exhibition!
  • Florence – cradle of the Renaissance, home to Michelangelo’s David and unbeatable gelato.

Beyond the Big Towns

Italy’s magic often hides in its minor cities (and there are so so…sooooo many of them! :). Our favourites are:

  • Cinque Terre (Liguria) – five pastel fishing villages hanging off cliffs above the sea, so photogenic as it can get!
  • Parma (Emilia-Romagna) – elegant, musical, and with food that will stun you!
  • Bolzano (South Tyrol) – a city where German culture meets Italian culture in an explosive mix of flavours!
  • Lecce (Puglia) – nicknamed “The Florence of the South,” full of Baroque architecture and olive trees 🙂
  • Mantova (Lombardy) – lakeside, artistic, and blissfully quiet — an underrated gem for couples who love culture without chaos.

For Sea and Sun Lovers

Couples loving sunny days and flip flop have plenty of destinations to choose in Italy too! Here are just few ideas:

  • Amalfi Coast (Campania) – colorful houses, steep cliffs, and limoncello sunsets.
  • Sardinia (Cala Goloritzé, La Maddalena) – turquoise waters rivaling the Maldives.
  • Puglia (Polignano a Mare, Gallipoli) – whitewashed towns perched above crystal coves.
  • Sicily (San Vito Lo Capo, Cefalù) – beaches that mix Caribbean vibes with ancient temples nearby.
  • Elba Island (Tuscany) – ideal for quiet escapes, kayaking, and endless sea views.

Bonus: If you visit in Spring

If you’re thinking about coming to Italy in Spring with your loved one, here is our best insider tip: go to Meran and visit the Trauttmansdorff Gardens in Merano.

This is one of our Lost on the Route’s team favourite places and in spring is just an “Ultimate” experience! 😉

It’s a dreamlike botanical park where plants from all over the world bloom together — over 80 themed gardens, mountain panoramas, and even tropical corners. Perfect for a peaceful day (we recommend at least 6-7 hours) surrounded by color, nature, and the scent of any flower you can imagine 😉

4. The Italian Lifestyle

is all about “slow” over rush,

and couples can find time to reconnect!

take time slowly - italy travel tips

One of Italy’s best-kept secrets isn’t a monument… It’s the hidden mindset! 😉

Here in Italy, life truly runs slow... espresso breaks are sacred, long lunch breaks are the rule, and in general people seem to never be in a hurry (leave aside a few industrial areas in major cities).

Strolling around town, on the sea promenades, or in the mountain trails are all rituals, and no one looks at you funny for sitting in a piazza doing absolutely nothing…

On the contrary, just go to any piazza around 11 am or 5 pm, and count the number of ruby glasses of Aperol on the tables! 😉

For long-distance couples meeting after a long time, this rhythm is gold!

After months of video calls and rushing between airports, in Italy, they can find the right environment to slow down and reconnect.

Whether it’s sharing a two-hour lunch in a trattoria, watching people go by on a seaside promenade, or taking an evening “passeggiata” through town, Italy is a country that gently forces you to breathe! 😉

It’s not laziness — it’s philosophy!

We Italians call it “la dolce vita”, the sweet life… and trust me, it’s the perfect backdrop to remember what being together actually feels like! 😀

Reason 5. Food build memories,

and Italian food is special

even in un-fancy restaurants!

isa from lostontheroute walking in saint tropez

In Italy, food is a religion, and it isn’t just what you eat — it’s how you connect!

Meals are slow, shared, filled with tradition, and because of that, intrinsically emotional!

Even in the most modest “trattoria” (more rural Italian restaurant), you’ll find something that makes you look at each other mid-bite and go “wow.”

I don’t say it because I am Italian (I tried food on all continents and I loved something everywhere!), but hey…the sheer variety and simple complexity of Italian food is something you cannot find anywhere else in the world (in my humble opinion, perhaps just China gets close with an honorable second place 😉

And the best part? You don’t need Michelin stars!

A plate of Cacio e Pepe in Rome — just pasta, pecorino, and pepper — feels like magic because it’s made with care!

In Naples, Margherita pizza arrives bubbling from a 400 °C oven, best eaten straight from the plate while laughing about who gets the last slice… 5 Euro!

Up north, a comforting Risotto alla Milanese or Tagliatelle al Ragù can turn a rainy night into a cozy memory!

Down in the south, fresh seafood pasta in Sicily or Orecchiette with Rape in Puglia tastes like summer bottled on a plate, really! 😀

Extra fun fact: There’s science behind it too: sharing meals releases oxytocin, the same hormone linked to trust and bonding. It’s why couples who eat together, stay together — and in Italy, eating slowly together is a daily ritual that visiting couples can jump into! 😉

So skip the candlelit clichés — grab a small table, order whatever the locals are having, and let the food do the work… It’s Italy, you can’t go wrong! 😉

Reason 6: Story-rich environments, Arts and creativity can enhance your couple perspective!

What most foreign people don’t know is that Italy is actually a relatively young country.

It only unified in 1861, after centuries of division, and it is one of the youngest countries in Western Europe!

When the Roman Empire collapsed in 4473 A.D., waves of Goths, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Spaniards, French, and Germans came to conquer the peninsula one after the other.

In between, mighty city-states like Venice, Florence, Genoa, Milan, and Naples rose to power — each as rich and independent as a small kingdom!

That long fragmentation over the centuries shaped the Italy we see today: a patchwork of identities!

Every city and region feels distinct — in art, dialect, food, even body language!

Florence paints with Renaissance calm… Naples dances in chaos and colors… Bolzano blends Alpine precision with Italian flair….and so on!

Traveling through them feels like leafing through different centuries in one trip — a reminder that beauty doesn’t come from uniformity, but from diversity.

For couples in long-distance relationships, that’s a big plus: Italy is not only convenient to visit, but it also doesn’t get boring easily, as every time there’s something new to explore!

In Italy, you don’t just “visit places” — you explore perspectives… walking through time together, feeling cultures blend, and see how contrasts can create harmony…they are all couple experiences that can enhance a visit and bring it beyond the “I just want to meet you and stay with you”.

Exploring, is building memories together!

And as a bonus, to connect to the previous point, much of this exploration can also be done for free: streets, churches, architectonic marvels, markets, and squares are all open museums…in Italy, you just need to walk to make memories! 🙂

7.  With Houses sold for 1Euro,

Italy could be more than a meetup place…

it could be your new chapter! 😉

dani showing la porta sul mare - bisceglie - puglia

Here’s another fun fact that most people outside Italy don’t know: in several regions, especially in the mountains and countryside, small towns are losing population fast.

Young people move to big cities, and entire villages (but trust me…so many!), risk becoming empty.

To revive these places, many municipalities have launched the famous (at least in Italy xD) “€1 House” initiatives, where old homes are sold for the symbolic price of 1 euro, or offered with renovation grants and tax incentives.

It’s not “free real estate” — you need to restore the house, commit to living there for a few years, and/or adapt to local life — but that is still a HUGE opportunity for those couples who dream of slowing down and twisting their lives.

For long-distance couples: this might be a chance to find an almost-free place together and build a new home and life chapter together.

It could be anything…a small stone house in Sicily near a citrus field…a mountain village home in Abruzzo, surrounded by the silence of the national parks…or perhaps a medieval lane hideaway in Piedmont or Le Marche, with vineyards outside your window!

Quiet. Affordable. Space to breathe. A lifestyle where your relationship grows not between flights, but between sunrises, meals, and community 😉

Thanks to these local initiatives, for many couples, Italy isn’t just the place to meet halfway, but has become the place where the distance finally ended, and a shared life began! 🙂

Conclusions 🙂

Long-distance relationships aren’t easy, and if you happen to be in one, you probably already know that…

They require planning, emotional resilience, and a whole lot of patience and airport coffees xD.

Because meeting each time is an “investment”, when you finally meet in person, the place you choose matters!

In this article we saw why Italy, for many LD couples already is that place: it’s convenient to reach, affordable if you travel smart, it is packed with varied experiences in a relatively small geographical area, it is central in Europe and located between continents, food is awesome and local culture is slow and laid back 🙂

It’s a country where beauty isn’t hidden behind ticket prices — it’s in the streets, the mountains, the coastline, the small cafés, the morning light on old walls (here you can find our TOP 100 favourite places to see in Italy for your inspiration ;).

Whether you’re reuniting for a weekend, traveling across regions together, or even imagining a future home — Italy gives you room to breathe, reconnect, and remember why you chose each other in the first place.

And said this, we truly reached the end, but…

Before going, as always, I want to ask you:

  • Have you ever been in a long-distance relationship before?
  • What do you think are the biggest challenges?
  • How often do you meet, and usually where do you go?
